I recently went to Burtons Grill and Bar with my mom for Mother’s Day. This is the new restaurant that opened where TGIF’s used to be, in the Tollgate Marketplace. Burtons is a chain with 24 locations on the East Coast. Luckily, we made a reservation. When we arrived on Saturday for lunch, those without a reservation were told that there was at least a one hour wait. Inside, the restaurant is very nice. There are large murals of flowers and a huge bar in the center of the room. The interior is very different than what TGIF’s looked like. Almost unrecognizable. I was curious about what type of food they sold, so when I sat down, I was very excited to look at the menu. Unfortunately, nothing really stood out to me. Burtons sells mainly American fare. I did notice that the prices seemed a bit high as there really were not many economical options. There was also a brunch menu that offered such items as French toast, eggs benedict and a “bag of donuts” for $10.00. There is no lunch menu, at least not on a Saturday, so we had to order off the dinner menu, which of course, then had dinner level prices. They had many different salad options and bowls, as well as sandwiches, seafood, and chicken items. If you really felt like splurging, they had steaks options ranging in price from $35-50. We started off with the bread service. This was the highlight of the meal for me. The bread was very good and came with pesto, herb and garlic butter and olive tapenade. I thought the short rib grilled cheese which I ended up getting was very mediocre. My mom felt the same about her crab cake. It was a relatively small crab cake for $24, but it did come with potatoes and succotash. We both would probably try something different next time. I asked my mom what she thought and she said “I would go back again but maybe not until a special occasion. The prices were a bit more than I would want to spend for just an average meal.” My Mom also thought it was a nice addition to the Bel Air area, much better than the TGIF it replaced. All in all, it was a nice dining experience. Burton’s is definitely someplace you could go to impress your date, just be prepared to pay a little extra to do so.
