Valentines’ Day is often associated with flowers, candy, and romance. But not everyone experiences the holiday the same way. While some people look forward to celebrating love, others connect the day with heartbreak, and loss.
Although Valentines Day is meant to celebrate love, its focus on romance can be emotionally difficult for many. Past experiences, breakups, or grief can turn what’s supposed to be a happy day into a painful reminder.
My brother’s girlfriend shared her perspective on the holiday saying she “Hates it to a core.” because of things that have happened to her on Valentines Day. Still, she appreciates being able to spend time with her family. Even when the day reminds her of people she’s lost.
In the end, Valentines Day means different things for different people. reminding us that not everyone is celebrating behind the hearts and chocolates but that shouldn’t stop you from having fun and celebrating.
Remember that Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be romantic at all. It can be a great excuse to do something fun, or cozy. Here are plenty of things you can do if you don’t have a lover to spend the holiday with.
