The Super Bowl was boring. The Patriots and Seahawks took the field on February 8 at 6:30 for what was supposed to be the biggest night of the year for American sports. Due to the political state of our country, there was less focus on the teams and players than the halftime show. The Seahawks ended up raising the trophy and winning 29-13.
When I say the Super Bowl was boring, I mean there was little action. From all the points scored, there were only four touchdowns and five field goals. To put that into perspective, there has been an average over the years where 5.44 touchdowns are scored. This means that the scores were carried by field goals and caused disappointment.
Even though they lost, the Patriots still put some good numbers. They had 18 first downs, 331 total yards, and 252 passing yards, which is greater than the Seahawks’ 194. Where the team fell off was when they allowed six sacks and two interceptions. The Seahawks’ defensive effort really solidified their win.
Usually, the allure of the Super Bowl is the parties and time we get to spend with our friends and family. My friend, Gracey Brennan, said, “I barely watched the game. I just liked hanging out with my people.” The Super Bowl is a time in which people gather together. “Especially since the Ravens weren’t playing, I don’t think really.” Gracey added. Overall, February is a refreshing time for the Football world. People come together over the music and over who they are rooting for.
In recent years, it feels like the Super Bowl hasn’t been the same. 70% of Americans have said it has been more commercialized, and it obviously has. Between commercials and halftime performances, the event has been less about the game. But like Gracey said, as a community we are able to come together and enjoy each other.
