Lane Kiffin is a coach that has been considered one of the best in college football. He has been the coach of the Ole Miss program since 2019, but Ole Miss was not his first stop in the coaching scene. He also has had various positions at Colorado state, Jacksonville Jaguars, USC, Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Vols, Alabama, Florida Atlantic, and finally Ole Miss. He has been around not only College Football but the NFL as well. His controversy started in Oakland when he was forced to resign but refused to sign the resignation papers; this became a long drug out story that ended with him getting fired. While at Tennessee, he would accuse another highly accomplished coach Urban Meyer of violating NCAA recruiting rules. These accusations would be false, but this would put Lane Kiffin into hot water. He would leave Tennessee and become the USC head coach. After a four-year stint at USC, he would be fired after a 0-2 start to the season. In 2013 he would apply for the Offensive Coordinator job at Alabama and would get the job. He would keep the job until 2017 when he accepted a job at Florida Atlantic. He did well at Florida Atlantic, but in December of 2019, he would leave FAU for the much larger Ole Miss program. He would have a good career at Ole Miss winning multiple bowl games. 

Now, we are nearing the end of the 2025 college football season. Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss has had an 11-win regular season, which is the first time in program history. With a historic season and playoffs ahead, you would think that Lane Kiffin would wait until the season is over to say he was leaving. That was not the case; he would announce it before playoffs would even start. Even committing to LSU, he would ask to finish the season with Ole Miss and lead the playoff run, but Ole Miss Athletic Director would tell him no; he cannot finish the season and just leave for LSU. This would make Lane Kiffin upset so he would threaten to poach players and coaches from Ole Miss. He told Ole Miss if he could not finish the season, players and coaches would be poached and leave Ole Miss to go to LSU with him. This would not be a difficult thing to do considering LSU is a much larger program with more funding. For the players this could offer more NIL money than Ole Miss would be able to offer. An insider at Ole Miss told “On3sports” that the situation has gotten messier than it was supposed to and that emotions are high at the moment. 

LSU has been a historically great program with four national championships, many seasons of winning records, some of the best current NFL players like Joe Burrow and Justin Jefferson, and some NFL Hall of Fame members like Y.A Tittle and Steve Van Buren. They have 12 SEC titles and three Heisman trophy winners. This program is used to win, but in the past couple of years they have struggled to make playoffs or win any SEC championships. In the past five years, they have not had a season with less than three losses. For such a good program, this number of losses has been a tough change for this team. Even with all the struggles, they still have one of the best atmospheres and have great recruiting potential, consistently being able to land top high school recruits. For any modern-day coach, this is a dream situation to coach LSU. 

Even though this is a dream situation for any coach, many people are upset by his withdrawal from the Ole Miss program. They see it as a betrayal of a program that he helped build from the ground up, leaving just for a better team that he had no part in helping construct. Also his act of poaching players has been much discussion of controversy. After accepting the job at LSU, he would not be allowed to coach to Ole Miss during the playoff run, this would cause him to get upset and poach players and coaches. The players will remain there until after the playoffs but some coaches have left for LSU while some are staying until after the playoffs. This entire situation has been a disaster for both Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss with LSU being caught in the cross fire.
