Texas Tech Red Raider, a team not known for winning many games. A team that has always been overshadowed by University of Texas and Texas A&M. While those two teams have been at the top of college football, Texas Tech has been in the back, trying to win championships but failing to even make the playoffs.
When it comes to Texas Tech making NFL level players, they have some success. They have had the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Wes Welker, Terence Steele, and Micheal Crabtree. All these players had solid careers in the NFL. Texas Tech does not struggle to produce NFL talent, but they struggle to win. The last time they were even ranked in the top 10 was 2008, and the last time they were ranked even top 25 was 2018. This is a team that has struggled to fight and stay competitive in the Big 12 conference. In 2025 though, they found a new gear.
Week one they played a small school, not even in the FBS division of D1, AR-Pine bluff. Texas Tech won 67-7 in a dominant victory over this small school. The top performer was the QB Behren Morton who would went 16/20, 201 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. This was a team that everyone had expected Texas Tech to beat, so this was not a surprise.
Week two they played another small school, but this time it was a D1 program. This team being Kent state. It would once again be a dominant victory over Kent State 62-14. The top performer would once again be QB Behren Morton, who would go 18/26, 258 yards and 3 touchdowns. This is once again a team Texas Tech would be expected to beat, so no one was surprised about this dominant performance.
In week three, Texas Tech would play their toughest opponent to this point, Oregon State. Even though this was their toughest opponent so far, this was still not a good team. Behren Morton would have an excellent game going 23/35, 464 passing yards and 4 touchdowns with only one interception.
Week four would be the first ranked opponent they have played, this team being Utah. Utah is currently ranked #23 in the country, so this was a big game for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas Tech however, would handle their work, beating Utah 34-10. The player of the game was backup QB Will Hammond who took over after Behren Morton suffered a helmet injury in the third quarter which would leave him out for the game. Will Hammond would throw for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Not a great performance for Texas Tech not having a WR or RB rush or catch over 100 yards.
Week five would be a bounce-back game for Texas Tech against Houston who at this time was undefeated. They were no match for the Texas Tech Raiders. Texas Tech won 35-11. Even though this score is very close to the score from week four, the stats are completely different. WR Caleb Douglas had 114 yards receiving, and RB J’Koby Williams had 102 yards rushing and two touchdowns. While I would be tempted to give the player of the week award to J’Koby Williams, the game that starting QB Behren Morton had was unbelievable. 28/40, 345 passing yards, and one touchdown. He was very efficient throwing the ball, and was not afraid to make big throws and plays.
Week six would be a rough game for both QB’s against Kansas. Starter Behren Morton got hurt, and Will Hammond struggled. So what was the final score you might be asking? Texas Tech would dominate 42-17. If both QB’s struggled, who picked up the slack? RB Cameron Dickey would dominate this game, winning my player of the week award. 263 yards rushing off 21 attempts and 2 touchdowns. This would show that even without both starting QB’s, Texas Tech would still dominate no matter what got in their way.
Texas Tech is having a dominant season that this program really needs. They have landed some top prospects this year. One of them being the number four ranked offensive tackle prospect in the country, five star Felix Ojo out of Lake ridge High School in Mansfield Texas. They have also landed four star WR Chase Campbell out of Frenship High School in Wolfforth Texas and four star offensive tackle Bryce Gillmore out of Proper High School in Proper Texas. With the recent success, many top prospects have the potential to sign for Texas Tech on top of the ones that have already committed.
