The quick pop of a paddle hitting a plastic ball might not sound like the start of a serious sport, but for millions of people across the country, it is. Pickleball, once known mainly as a casual backyard game, has quickly become one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. With its rising popularity, many schools are beginning to recognize its potential—and C. Milton Wright High School should consider adding a pickleball team as well.
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is played on a smaller court with paddles and a lightweight plastic ball. Because the rules are simple and the court is compact, the sport is easy for beginners to learn while still being competitive for experienced players. This balance is one of the main reasons the sport has become so popular.
Some students at C. Milton Wright already recognize the sport’s potential. Andrew Fuller, a student who enjoys playing pickleball in his free time, believes the sport would be a great addition to the school’s athletics program. “Pickleball is really fun and competitive, but it’s also easy to learn” Fuller said. “A lot of students who might not play other sports could still join and be good at it.”
Fuller also explained that the social aspect of the sport makes it especially appealing for students. “Most games are played in doubles, so you’re always working with a partner and communicating,” he said. “It makes the game more exciting, and it helps people get to know each other.”
One of the biggest benefits of pickleball is that it is very inclusive. Unlike some sports that require years of practice before someone can compete, pickleball allows new players to pick up the basics quickly. This means more students could have the opportunity to participate in a school sport, even if they have never played before.
Adding a pickleball team would also be practical for C. Milton Wright. The sport requires minimal equipment, and many pickleball courts can be set up on existing tennis courts with simple adjustments. Because of this, starting a team would be much less expensive than many other sports programs.
Beyond the logistics, pickleball could also bring students together. The sport is usually played in doubles, which encourages teamwork and communication. It is fast-paced, fun to watch, and creates an exciting environment for both players and spectators. For students who may not be involved in other sports, pickleball could provide a new way to represent their school and build school spirit.
As pickleball continues to grow across the country, high schools have an opportunity to be part of the trend. By adding a pickleball team, C. Milton Wright High School could give students a chance to try something new, stay active, and compete in a sport that is quickly gaining attention. With just a paddle, a ball, and a court, a new tradition could begin.
