In 2026, the world’s best winter athletes will meet in Italy which will include speed, skill, and satisfaction globally. This is known as the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics which will be scheduled for February. The event aims to blend Italian culture with the competition events. The sports that will be featured are alpine skiing, bobsleigh which is races in sleek sleds down icy tracks, curling where teams side stones on ice, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, luge where they race feet first on small sleds, ski jumping, short track speed skating, skeleton where they go head first on small sleds, ski mountaineering, snowboarding, and speed skating. Ski mountaineering is a new event that was added to the program. There is excitement that surrounds around the men’s hockey since they have high expectations for a gold metal run against rivals like Canada, with top NHL talent. The women’s hockey team is a veteran-led roster with Olympic champions. Figure skating has anticipation for U.S skaters to end a long singles medal drought.
The games are spread across a large area which requires significant travel for spectators. It’s known for being the most geographically spread-out game ever. There will be a spectator movement between Milan, Cortina, and other host cities. To connect these locations, organizers are counting on upgraded rail and networks to make transportation a main component of the 2026 games. The Olympics will be broadcast on NBC with live-streaming, and on-demand coverage available on the Peacock streaming service. The International Olympic Committee (ioc/news ) states that this will be the most-gender balanced winter games ever with 47% women athlete participation. This is driven by the most women events ever which is 50, including 12 disciplines with full gender equality.
I interviewed my friend Eric Tyminski who is a senior at C. Milton Wright. Eric states that what excites him most about the 2026 Winter Olympics is, “the competitiveness and perseverance between the athletes.” He enjoys ice skating and ice hockey, which are the sports he will find the most interesting while watching the Olympics. He believes that the Winter Olympics are important on a global level because “it brings together athletes from around the world to celebrate”. I asked him about ski mountaineering since it’s being added as a new sport in 2026, he wasn’t familiar with it but after researching it he stated that, “it looks like a challenging and exciting sport and people will be entertained while watching athletes perform.”
