Club sports come with lots of benefits for children like physical fitness, making new friendships, and having a lot of teamwork. But over the past years the rise in prices for club sports has been increasing and has been having a major impact on families being able to pay for clubs for their children.
Clubs are so expensive because they come with paying for faraway tournaments, hotels, private lessons, camps, equipment, and uniforms. Not only that but also registration, team fees, coaching fees, and gas. All of this added up to pay club for parents is extremely difficult because of extra work hours for parents, athletes maybe having to contribute and help, and not being able to pay for other house spendings like fixing up your home when needed, credit card debt, and delaying other important spending like family vacations. Not only does club hurt financially, but it causes less family time, stress among the athlete or parents, and pressure on the athlete to feel guilty about financial spending.
I interviewed my classmate Lilly Budelis who plays soccer for Coppermine. I asked her a few questions about the price of her soccer club. She said the cost is “Very expensive, around 2,000-3,000 dollars per season”. So, with the prices of how much club it is, she contributes to paying some of her club soccer to help with her parents, and she pays around 300 dollars to support. So, many people end up not participating in club sports because of the high costs.
