Life of a Showgirl

Life of a Showgirl

Life of a Showgirl is different. Some fans are pleased; some fans are upset. The new record evidently has a different reaction than all of her other albums that have mostly positive reviews. Personally, I am not a total Taylor Swift stan. I have liked her songs that are deeper and slower, not many of her pop songs. But I also have always said what’s good is good. With that, I was still surprised by the new album.

I thought most of the songs were almost superficial. Some fans might praise those same lyrics because they have a ‘hidden meaning’ that calls out the dark side of Hollywood. To me, it just seems unrelatable. Usually her ‘hidden meanings’ are more poetic but again, they have a more superficial and insincere tone. Her song Actually Romantic is a quiet dig at another pop star, Charli XCX who had previously written a suspected diss track about Taylor. Taylor implied that Charli’s problems with her is a romantic obsession. This is immature and kind of feels like something that would be said in a high school setting.

Along with the idea that a lot of the lyrics are immature and superficial, there is a new tone of sexuality that to me was unappealing. A lot of the remarks made about her now fiancée, Travis Kelce, were odd. These suggestive lyrics are also new to Taylor’s image. Some are arguing that the reason people don’t like this new version of her is because she is a woman, that if she was a man people wouldn’t have this backlash. I agree with that to a certain point, but someone like me, I don’t like music that is suggestive no matter who it is from.

On the other hand, there have been many fans that would defend this album. C. Milton’s very own Mrs. Jones has been a fan of Taylor Swift during high school and seems to fully support the album. “This album is upbeat and catchy—I have enjoyed listening to it over these last few weeks,” she says. With this album, it seems that personal preference will dictate your expierence with the album.
