The School Backpack Policy

Safety or Scam?
The School Backpack Policy

As we all know, the backpack policy sucks. There is a new rule in place for our schools. That rule being no backpacks allowed during class time. This means your backpacks mustgo in your lockers, and you must carry all your belongings without using a bag. There havebeen many negative thoughts on this new school rule with many people saying it makes lifeso much harder than before. This rule has faced much scrutiny within the studentpopulation.

What actually is the rule? Any large backpacks and bags are supposed to be stored in yourlocker during the school day. There is an exception however, for small pencil cases andhygiene bags. My opinion on this rule is that it does not help but harm the studentpopulation. The students don’t always feel like going back and forth between classes totheir lockers, also carrying items at times can be cumbersome and quite annoying. Therule is supposed to help combat violence and the concealment of weapons in school, but Iam not convinced this works. With you able to bring a bag, something could still beconcealed. Even if it is in your locker, people are more vulnerable when changing classesdue to the large group of people in the halls during this time, leading to more possiblefatalities if someone decided they wanted to do harm.

I asked a fellow student about his opinions on the rule, Jon Y. Here’s his thoughts, he feelslike the clear backpacks were a cash grab. He said completely useless and if someonedecided they wanted to, it would not stop anyone. “I feel like the clear backpack rule wasonly for money, and the backpack rule for this year is completely useless” I asked otherpeople who preferred to stay anonymous said they were not a huge fan of the rule andwould like to have the back packs back in schools. Now some Freshman did not mind thisrule due to Southampton not having back packs.

I personally feel like the backpack rule was unnecessary and is not something to solve theissue, but instead make it look like they are solving the issue. Instead of putting more intosecurity or mental health facilities for people who have these issues, they try to get rid ofbackpacks. It’s a placebo rule, not meant to make you safer, but just give this illusion ofsafety, like giving you a fake pill when you’re sick and want to feel better. This solvesnothing and only makes the students’ lives harder.
