What would you do if you saw a monkey being bullied everyday? In early 2026, a small Japanese macaque named Punch-kun (or simply Punch) became a global viral sensation, capturing hearts with his poignant, heart-wrenching story of abandonment, friendship, and resilience. Born at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan in July 2025, Punch was rejected by his mother and subsequently bullied by other monkeys in his troop, finding comfort only in a stuffed orangutan toy, which he dragged with him everywhere.
Without a mother to protect him or teach him the social hierarchy, Punch was immediately treated as an outcast. Videos showing him being pushed away, chased, or ignored by adult monkeys went viral, causing immense concern among viewers worldwide. To help with his loneliness and anxiety, zookeepers provided Punch with a soft IKEA orangutan plush toy, known as a Djungelskog.
Punch’s story has had a significant impact, causing visitor numbers at the Ichikawa City Zoo to more than double, prompting the zoo to implement entry restrictions to prevent overcrowding. My friend Madi shared her opinion in a short interview. “I feel really bad for the monkey.” She also shared “I wish someone would adopt him so he doesn’t get bullied anymore.”
In the end punch the monkey is a reminder that no one deserves to be treated like a punching bag.
