Our first bit of this month’s good news; a treatment has been developed for previously untreatable blood cancer! Recently released research by Blood Cancer UK was recapped in Gavin Hanes Positive.News article; “Revolutionary therapy treats ‘untreatable’ blood cancer”, explaining the discovery gene therapy has been used to treat T-cell leukemia. The genetic code of T-cells is being edited to target and destroy cancer cells! “Now we can take white blood cells from a healthy donor and change a single letter of DNA code in those cells and give them back to patients to try to tackle this hard-to-treat leukemia.” Says UCL professor Waseem Qasim. This bit of news is not only amazing, but revolutionary. Its one big step toward a cure for all cancer.
Regarding environmental news, previous environmental damages in Europe’s oyster reefs are beginning to be undone through the recreation of reefs, called “mother reefs.” According to Tom Pattison on Positive.news in the article “A vast oyster reef is about to transform the English coast”, by the end of this year, 40000 mother reefs will be back on the English seabed’s. Tom Pattison states, “the UK is about to get Europe’s largest oyster reef, with four million native oysters set to be returned to the seabed off the coast of Norfolk in eastern England.” 4 million oysters are a lot! According to Pattison, “Conservationists say the scale of the project could transform local waters and provide a model for marine restoration across the continent.” 40000 reefs and 4 million oysters is a substantial project; dramatically aiding oyster reefs returns to the coastline. It’s safe to say that the English oysters are back and here to stay!
In local positive news, teachers at C Milton Wright are participating in a school wide step challenge to promote health and fitness. Multiple teams of a few teachers each have joined together in an effort to win through getting the most steps combined. May the fittest win!
