The country of Iran has recently been struggling with mass protests. The protests began on December 28, 2025, after the Iranian rial began to crash going from 42,000k rials to the dollar to over 1 million rials to the dollar overnight this caused mass unrest in the country that led to the start of protests in the country. While the collapse of Iran’s currency is the catalyst for the protest it is one of many reasons Iranians are protesting some among them are: repression, high inflation, corruption in the government as well as an overall worsening economy.
The protesters have called for equality for women, an end to corruption, economic improvement, as well as an end to theocratic rule in Iran. The protest has seen wide sweeping support across Iran with protests being recorded in every single Iranian province with people from across the political spectrum ranging from communists to monarchists with most being in favor of democratic reforms according to Stephen Zunes.
The protest has been continually going on since the 28th of December with Iranian security forces trying to quell the unrest. Iranian security forces cracked down on protesters on January 8th and 9th with death tolls at least in the thousands according to amnesty international. The leader of Iran Ali Khamenei has called the mostly peaceful protesters rioters and has stated that they must be “put in their place”. The Iranian government also cut internet to the entire country on January 8th with internet service yet to be restored to the country. Support for the protests around the world has been immense with many people around the world coming out in drove to support the protesters. With hundreds of thousands of supporters showing up in Toronto, D.C, and across the world. As of now protests in Iran have continued as the situation in the country appears to worsen by the day.
