According to CNN’s article; “How a dogged detective cracked a quadruple-murder cold case and revealed a suspected serial killer”, on December 6, 1991, in Austin, Texas, four girls were murdered while working at their local frozen yogurt shop. This tragedy struck the whole city with the haunting mystery of who killed them.
At the scene of the crime, the four girls were left in the back of the store after being shot with a .22 caliber pistol and a .380 caliber pistol. After this, the murderer burned down the building to attempt to burn all traces of his presence in the building. With the remains of the building that was left when officers arrived on scene, there was a lack of physical evidence besides signs of sexual assault on the victims and .380 shell casing from the pistol. Due to the limited amount of technology in 1991, samples were only collected from sexual assault kits and one of the victim’s fingernails. No direct suspect was linked to these results.
In this past September, the lab matched DNA to another murder and sexual assault case around the same time. The suspect was named Robert Eugene Brashers, who had crime convictions in the past. Robert was convicted of killing eight people (confirmed) through the years of 1990 to 1998. Robert wound up committing suicide while in a standoff with the police in 1999.
Considering Robert has passed, he will not be able to serve his time in prison for the horrific crimes he committed. This famous case being solved was able to provide some level of comfort to the family of the victims and the people who dealt with the tragedy in the city.
