In June of 2023 the Equality Federation found 72 bills that were introduced to ban
transgender students from athletics. The Map Movement project reported 23 states
banned transgender students from participating in sports consistent with their gender
identity. The transgender sports bans are regulations or laws that prohibit students from
playing on school sports teams. Many of these bans impact students as young as
elementary school. Professional athletic associations are able to make their own rules for
their teams are not regulated by these rules.
The main reason why some people support banning transgender athletes is
because they believe that transgender women and girls could have an unfair competitive
side because of physical differences. Others say that transgender student’s participation
has been a non-issue and believe they should have access to play without any problems.
Lots of these bans are cruel hate groups that discriminate against LGBTQ+ people across
the country. Playing sports in schools helps young teenagers with good physical health and
can help build their self-confidence and self-esteem. The Human Rights Campaign states
that transgender youth experience all kinds of mistreatment and that sports participation
can help overcome this issue. The bans are not based on scientific evidence but rather
opinion based on athletes.
Some more reasonings behind the transgender sports bans are because there are
athletics that are concerned about the fairness by certain people having a biological
advantage. Transgender women who go through male puberty may have a physical
advantage in strength and speed. The goal for any sport is to maintain fairness and
integrity. Athletes take their sports very seriously and have strong opinions about who
should and shouldn’t be involved.
