HCPS has proposed to change the start times for elementary and high schools. High school would start 9 A.M while Elementary school would start at 7 A.M. Why would they want to change the start times? Well HCPS has several reasons to change the start times for both schools. The High Schoolers would be able to get more sleep and help perform better academically. These reasons will benefit the students with the fact that grades will go up, and they will be able to sleep in longer. Elementary schoolers will struggle to start but it will help them learn responsibility a little more. Extra sleep will have students more well rested and will be able to use more brain power to work harder in school.
The problem with this is that those students who play sports will have no time to be home and spend time with family or friends or recreational activities. Students need time to themselves for mental health reasons. Mental health is an incredibly important part of ones health physically and of course mentally. Changing the time could hurt students in rest time and time with friends and family.
There are many arguments for and against changing the start time. On one hand, you have more rest time for students. On the other hand, you have no time for students to spend time with family and other relationships. Both have their positives and negatives, but it is up to you to decide.
