It has been a rough month when it comes to the increased danger in schools. There have been many shootings across the country. Not too long ago, there was one not far from our home at Joppatowne Highschool. This shooting ended in the death of one victim. Our condolences go out to the young man’s friends and family. 

The Joppatowne shooting occurred during a bathroom fight that ended in a violent altercation, ending the life of a young man. In the past month there has been one notable shooting in Georgia at Apalachee High. This shooting left two students and two teachers killed, and 9 victims injured. This loss of life is truly devastating for the local community around this school. 

In just this year alone, there have been 24 school shootings ending with 29 victims. Out of all those shootings, 7 of the shooters have been arrested and two of them died. For this number of lives lost, there does not seem to be much justice for the families and friends of these victims.  

 In the Joppatowne tragedy, the shooter was a 16-year-old kid, and the kid who lost his life was 15, ending his life way too short. The 16-year-old fled the scene but was found minutes later at an apartment complex nearby. Within 15 minutes of the shooting, up to 100 cops were at Joppatowne High school. Police arrested him, and as of now, he will be tried as an adult. He could be charged with murder, first and second-degree assault, and use of firearm in a crime. 

In the Georgia school shooting, according to the police, the shooter had missed the previous nine days of school. On the day of the incident, he rode the bus with a rifle and knife concealed in his backpack, walking into the school freely and being able to cause harm to the victims. The shooter’s mom called into the school, informing them that her son might attempt to cause harm to the students in the school. After informing the school about this possible risk, the SRO went and searched a kid with the same name as his. As they started talking to the same name kid, gun shots rang out. Those shots led to the events that occurred that day. 

It should be interesting to see how these events make schools and local law enforcement work together to help stop these tragedies that are occurring in and around our schools. The school systems should be making some adjustments to the protection in schools to keep kids safe.
