C. Milton Wrights Girls Field Hockey Team is starting at the beginning. To give you a recap on last year’s season, the girls finished their season in the State Quarterfinals against State Winners, Glen Elg. Their record was 10-4 last season. Junior player Kaityln Mann says, “We lost all of our games in the beginning than turned around our season and won 10 straight games.” The team lost eleven seniors, four of whom started and had all conference titles, it was a very skilled 2024 class. Three of the seniors, Claire Burrows (York commit), Winslow Dipeso (Temple commit) and Sara Durburrow were captains and really brought the team together. Teammates on the Varsity squad say that it is hard to not imagine last year’s seniors on the field with them. It was a remarkably close group last year and all had an amazing and fun season together.
This year’s Field Hockey team is all brand new. While losing eleven seniors, coaches need to make sure they grab their strongest, talented, and diligent players all together in a team. When a new team comes about, it is difficult to gain chemistry immediately. Captains this year are Senior Phoebe Hennessey, Senior Kenzie Bunn, Senior Raelynn Armantarous, and Junior Paityn Gossman. These four girls are leading this year’s team in something amazing. This year’s senior class had six seniors. Which means, this year’s field hockey team is noticeably young.
To help with team bonding and chemistry, the girls have team dinners to help get to know each other off the field. They also normally plan a team yoga class close to playoffs to release any stress or emotions going on during playoffs. Team sleepovers will also occur to help build some chemistry. Unfortunately, there can be some negative things with sports, as every athlete knows. Teams struggle with some things, and it is completely normal. This year’s Field Hockey team is struggling with connection. “In the past years it came easier to have that automatic connection, but it isn’t this year,” teammates say. “Things are not getting communicated throughout the team on and off the field. Our team is lacking energy and effort as our motto throughout the past couple of years has been giving 110%.”
As you can see, Field Hockey is really starting fresh. New freshman, sophomores, and juniors are entering the team and this can be difficult to adjust to after losing eleven seniors. The team is incredibly positive on this new adventure and cannot wait for the season to keep on going. Even with difficulties, they will stick up for each other and play through any kind of obstacle they face. Wishing the C. Milton Wright Girls Field Hockey some luck! Go ‘Stangs!
