Recently, the C Milton Wright Journalism class got invited to the Feild of screams Media Night. They graciously gifted us with four V.I.P tickets, but only two of us went, me and my photographer, Alivia Pettiford. So, on September 13th we hopped in her mom’s car and hit the road. From the Bel air area, it takes a little over an hour to get there, but the drive is definitely worth it.
When we first got there, we were directed to the media area, which had free food like pulled pork sliders, chili with cornbread, a vegetable tray and more. For refreshments they had a tub of water bottles, and a tub of canned soda but that’s not it. They also had cake art, like a bloody brain, a used chainsaw, and a can of bugs and body parts, which when cut tasted very good. But if we didn’t like cake, they also had a cookie tray. Right next to the media area, was there “Chainsaw bar” which me and Alivia did not take part of.
After exploring the media area, we walked around the main area and figured out which attraction to do first. We decided to do the Haunted Hayride, so we got in line and were in the wagon in a minute or two. This was by far the longest attraction, having six to seven different themed stopping points in the ride. I won’t talk about all of them, so as not to spoil the ride for those for haven’t been yet. My top three stops were the circus, the spider room and the motorcycle bar. The circus was decorated very realistically, and the clown actors’ make up was very good. At one point, an actor was crawling upside down and got right in Alivia’s face and smiled very creepily. The bug room was very dark, and I could only see when the strobe lights were flashing. This created an element of surprise, because the actors could disappear and re-appear in seconds right behind me. The last one in my personal top three was the motorcycle bar. I could tell the actors really put their all in the part. It wasn’t the scariest stop of them all, but it definitely felt like we were out in the country getting shot at by the locals.
After we went on the hayride, we walked right over to the nocturnal wasteland and got in line, which took only a few minutes. We first entered through a room full of very creepy dolls everywhere I looked. After that we walked through a chain link fence, suspended in the air, while the workers were yelling at us to get out. We walked into a big foggy room with green lasers at our waists making it look like we were walking through a swamp. Actors would randomly appear and scare us and then go back under the lasers where we couldn’t see them. From there we walked into a narrow hallway with spinning walls and a moving floor that made us trip and fall. This was the shortest attraction out of the four and the least scary, but the swamp area was very cool.
After this we decided to go into the den of darkness. Me and Alivia agree, this was definitely the scariest out of the four. When we walked into the house, the door closed, and we were in a small room with a screen behind us. After looking around for a second, a man with an axe jumped out of the closet and started walking around the room. After he walked around us, the screen turned on and showed videos of executions and the actor was saying how this is his inspiration. After that he pushed me out of the room and shoved Alivia out. After this we walked up the steps and had to walk through big body bags hanging from the ceiling which, lead to a workshop with two people in bloody pig outfits, they hit us with their chainsaw and laugh very menacingly. They lead us to a crazy doctor in a half skull mask, who ran around us screaming. After w left that room, we were greeted by a man on a table eating something viciously. We didn’t have too much time to admire the scenery though, because someone else jumped out of a box and pushed us out, as soon as we reached the end of the table. The next room was the worst. When we got there’s a little girl who told us to start crawling, and then a trap door opened, which we had to get on all fours to fit through. It’s a narrow path, in complete darkness with obstacles we had to climb over. After we made it to the end of the hallway, the lights are flashing, and there are actors in white bloody robes moving around but only when the lights are off. After this, we went through one more butcher shop room with bodies hanging from the walls and a man who chased us out with a chainsaw.
After this, we decided to take a breather and walk around a little more, we played a game where you throw fake heads into a themed basketball hoop, but the heads are very hard to get in. When we went back to the media area, and they were cutting the cake art. It was really cool for field of screams, to get this just for all the journalists they invited. Alvia got a piece of the brain, which was vanilla, and I got the first piece of the chainsaw, which was chocolate. The cake was okay, the special frosting they used didn’t taste the best, but the art still looked really cool. After grabbing a Dr. Pepper, and eating some more cake, me and Alivia thought it was time to go in the last attraction.
Frightmare Asylum was very scary walking up to it. It looked like a real asylum, and people were running out screaming being chased. After getting in line and waiting a minute, we were up. When walking in the first two rooms are themed like electrical execution rooms, with wires and sparks all over the room. When walking in the second room, we saw the person being executed, which looks real because the actor is yelling and shaking around so much. Once we walked out, two of the “patients” in the asylum guided us to the next room. Here, kids in the asylum stare and do odd stuff as we walked by. After walking by this boy playing chess by himself, he put his body between me and Alivia’s, then cornered her and stared at her while slamming his arms on the wall behind her. This lasted about 20 seconds, before he turned around and started staring at me while he did it. After letting us go, we walked into the next room which had a bunch of creepy kids, in clown costumes getting ready while staring at us, which were very creepy. There was a clown family room connected to the makeup room which we were walking out of, and lead to the basement which had an old guy in a room hallway with the most dolls we’ve ever seen in our life who chased us out of the Asylum with his chainsaw.
Overall, the Den of Darkness was definitely the scariest, with the Frightmare Asylum coming in second. Thank you to Feild of Screams for Inviting us to this event. Me and my photographer had so much fun. I’ll definitely be back next year!
