The Bel Air Town Run is a race that not only gives people a chance to exercise and show their talent, but it is also a race that brings together the entire community of Bel Air. The Bel Air Town Run is a 5k (3.1 mile) race that began in 1980, and this past Sunday, June 1st, 2025, was its 45th anniversary.
The course of the race explores downtown Bel Air, starting on Main Street, going past little shops and old buildings, weaving through local neighborhoods, and finally finishing in Shamrock Park. The course is hilly, but this past race, participants had perfect racing weather, with temperatures in the 60’s. CMW teachers Katie Jones, Kelly Younts, April Plaisted, and Allison Salvi appreciated the clear skies and sunshine.
But as I mentioned before, this race is not just about what happens on the course. You can feel the energy before the race; people are excited and happy no matter what level they are going to race at. They are thrilled to see old friends, meet new people, and celebrate their town for another year. Participants dress up in costumes, homeowners in the neighborhoods sit outside on their lawns to cheer, and police officers even race in full uniform! CMW Math teacher Lisa Smith cheered on runners with a cow bell outside her home.
After the race there is another whole celebration! Awards are in the Humbert Amphitheater of Shamrock Park and cash prizes are offered for 1st 2nd and 3rd men, women, masters men, and masters women. And there are awards for 1st 2nd and 3rd of every age group. The top male finisher was Cameron Hindle in 15:02 and the top female finisher was Hannah Betman in 17:34. Shawn Loper, CMW cross country coach, won second place in the men’s master division.
One of the sponsors, Independent Brewery had a truck after the race selling beer for participants to celebrate their accomplishment. Das Bierhalle also had a discount for participants of the race. There was music and dancing, and the whole community was having a great time.
So, while the Bel Air Town Run is a highly competitive race with lots of talent, it is also an event that everyone who lives nearby looks forward to all year. It’s a chance to come together in the community to celebrate health, hard work, and our beautiful community!
