Ever wondered what would happen if a group of teen girls ended up stranded in the wilderness? The lengths they would go to survive? The exhilarating thriller series Yellowjackets has all the gory details and more. This series, created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, follows a New Jersey high school girls’ soccer team on their way to nationals. If you haven’t figured it out already, they don’t quite make it, as their plane crashes and they end up in the Canadian wilderness. This series stars a great number of actors/actresses such as Ella Purnell, Sophie Thatcher, Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, and many more.
This does just follow their survival story though. It explores deep themes of trauma, addiction, and memory. Each character handles what they go through in a unique way that reveals their complexities. The show is also laid out with back-and-forth flashbacks from when they are stuck in the wilderness to when they are older and (some) are still alive. This thriller has a unique and intriguing plot with twists and turns. In the series, it will also go back in time to explore the different privileges and underlying conditions of certain characters. For example, Lottie Matthews, a member of the team, is shown as a little girl that gets prescribed medicine for her schizophrenia, which later impacts the team when they crash.
The series is originally based in the 90s and features unique and nostalgic aesthetics. It includes popular 90s needle drops from bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana. Characters are seen wearing 90s inspired clothes and room decorations any 90s kid would recognize. The series is heavily inspired by the 1972 Andes Flight 571 crash, which was just like the show, the endless fight for survival. Season 1 is their initial crash during the warm months. In the second season, it gets scarier as they enter into the winter months, and food is scarce. In the third season, there is a little bit of both.
Yellowjackets just ended their third season but have been renewed for a fourth because of their rising popularity. I highly recommend this binge-worthy show!
