Hip-Hop Hot Chicken & Seafood is a Mayland only restaurant chain that I’m sure many of you reading have eaten before. I’ve been there multiple times before, and they never disappoint me.
As the name suggests, they specialize in fried fish and chicken. The types of fish they have are Ocean perch, Whiting, Trout, Catfish Filets/Nuggets, Tilapia, Jumbo shrimp, and popcorn shrimp. For the chicken options they have, a pound of livers, a pound of gizzards, Fried Chicken legs, thighs and wings, along with chicken tenders and even chicken wings in hot, mild BBQ or plain. Not only that, but they also have many different sides like mac n cheese, fried pickles, collard greens, battered mushrooms, potato salad and many more. They’re most known for the seasoning they put on all the chicken and fries, “crack”. It’s a mix of a bunch of seasonings, like lemon pepper but sweeter. It’s very hard to explain, but very good.
For the review, I got the Soul Side Special, which is one fish or chicken option, and two sides. I got chicken legs, fries and mac n cheese with a side order of hush puppies. Anytime you get a chicken or fish meal, it always comes with two pieces of bread and usually a cup of hot sauce, which are great additions. The chicken was amazing; it was very crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. The fries were the same and also went well with the hot sauce. The mac n cheese wasn’t my favorite. It wasn’t seasoned, and all the cheese was in clumps. The hush puppies, however, were very good and very well-seasoned. I’ve never had hushpuppies before, but this was a good introduction. If you don’t know what hush puppies are, they’re fried balls of cornmeal and basically taste like fried balls of dough.
Overall, everything was great, and I’ll definitely be back.
