Disney is no stranger to controversies, but this is a big one.
The new live action Snow White hit the theaters on March 21st and within three days it already has everyone talking.
I am really taken aback by all the cruel and just evil reviews people are leaving. I’ve seen some reviews calling it “exhaustingly awful” and “toe-curlingly terrible”. Those words seem so crazy to me because I was giggling and kicking my feet the whole movie, thanks to the chemistry between Rachel Zegler who played Snow White and Andrew Burnap who play the bandit Jonathan. The whole time those two were together it felt like a real fairytale.
In my review of the trailer last month I spoke on how the 7 dwarfs could’ve ended up in my nightmares, I take that back now. With all of their charming personalities, even Grumpy, touched me. From Dopey’s puppy eyes to Happy’s great outlook on life they were a big part of the movie and added character.
One other big complaint people had was how the new movie deviated from the original. Sure, there were some new characters and new songs, but the original was also made almost 90 years ago, so it was due for some changes. People still would’ve complained either way.
I talked to Cameryn Loper about her opinion on the additions to the plot, and she said she loved them! She said, “The new characters were great, especially Jonathan, who is the new spin on the prince. Instead of the prince being a random stalker that somehow falls in love with Snow White, they actually develop a relationship first and get to know each other before falling in love.” She also mentioned how she liked that there was more of a backstory on Snow White’s parents and kingdom, and she really likes the new songs like “Waiting on a Wish” and “A Hand Meets a Hand”. I agree with a lot of what she said, and I hope people can learn to appreciate this part of the movie.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this film, and I think its getting a bad wrap just because of the actors outside of the movie, not based on the actual performance. Rachel Zelger did a great job portraying snow whites’ character, and I loved seeing the on-screen chemistry between Snow White and Jonathan! I definitely recommend seeing this movie and decide for yourself if you think the movie was a success.
