On February 28th, Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Donald Trump in the Oval Office to discuss the Ukraine mineral resources agreement with the United States, but the meeting turned contentious, and the agreement was not signed.
The meeting ended up being Trump shouting at Zelenskyy, and marked the first time in US history where a sitting US president openly attacked a visiting head of state, and it seemed to most people that Trump was trying to get Zelenskyy angry so he could back out of the US support of Ukraine.
A main topic of discussion and contention was Trump criticizing Zelenskyy for not wearing a suit. Vice President JD Vance also chimed in and falsely accused Zelensky of not thanking the United States for their support in the war, even though this was one of the first things Zelensky said when they initially sat down for the meeting.
Many thought it was a strange idea to put this meeting in front of a bunch of journalists. While not entirely out of character for the current president, what concerned many on both sides was the president’s post debate comments. Where Trump described the fiasco as “Good TV” causing many to believe that the president did not care for making a peace agreement, instead opting for entertainment.
5 days later, Trump suspended all military support to Ukraine, and the mineral agreement remained unsigned, leading many to wonder what comes next.
