Interstellar is a cinematic work that goes beyond the stars. It is a piece directed by Christopher Nolan, who is notorious for his complex storytelling and breathtaking aesthetics. This movie stars some of Hollywood’s biggest names including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Timothee Chalamet. Released in late 2014, the film just reached its 10th anniversary. For this milestone, the film has returned to IMAX theaters for a limited time. They were back in theaters for about a week.
This film is initially set on Earth in 2067, in the midst of the second dust bowl. Earth is slowly becoming uninhabitable for humans. Famine and blight are overtaking the food supply, and dust is causing health concerns for people around the world. There are no longer militaries, and the people are forced to fend for themselves while starving and struggling to breathe. The main character Joesph Cooper, lives with his family on their farm. His daughter, Murph, claims there’s a ghost messing with the bookcase in her room. One day after a dust storm, they find a secret message in dust patterns on her floor. Cooper says they are caused by gravitational anomalies. The decoding of the message reveals coordinates that lead Cooper and his daughter to a secret NASA location. With his engineering background, he is invited to board a mission to save the world. He and his team are sent to space through a wormhole placed by Saturn to find another planet habitable for humans. Throughout this mission, there are successes, but many hardships. Let’s just say this mission lasts a lot longer than expected.
The making of this movie is truly incredible. The film has an astonishing soundtrack made by Hans Zimmer, who captures the mystery of space through his music. Christopher Nolan worked with theoretical physicist Kip Thorne to make sure the movie was scientifically possible and followed the laws of physics. Almost everything was possible, excluding the “ice clouds” found on one of the planets visited by the team. Nolan attempted to use the least amount of CGI and green screen possible by creating many physical sets and using real shooting locations such as Iceland. The visuals in this movie are so advanced, each frame of a scene with the black hole took up to 100 hours to render.
This movie highlights the significance of human contact and love. The betrayals, risks, and connections in this movie show through complex characters throughout their entire lives. The lengths people will go to save people they love vs the entire population have very drastic differences.
