It’s time to defy gravity with the new film, Wicked (Part 1). Staring the fabulous Ariana Grande as Glinda and the jaw dropping Cynthia Erivo as Elphie, the film is an instant hit.
The movie came out in theaters November 22, 2024, and is taking the world by storm. With a breathtaking set, gorgeous costumes, elaborate choreography, and actors who are nothing less than the best, it was bound for greatness.
The movie tells the story of a girl named Elphaba who was misunderstood because of her mysterious green skin and magical powers, and her unlikely but beautiful friendship with the popular Glinda. The movie follows how life changes for the girls as they attend Shiz University, and their dreams become a possibility. But they begin to find out their dreams weren’t exactly what they expected.
The entire set was built in real life, from the gorgeous gold school to the sparking emerald city. Everything was designed and built to perfection. It took about 20 weeks to build the entire set; the average movie set takes only a few weeks.
There are three stages to making a movie, production, interruption, and then completion. The production of Wicked started back in December 2022 and is finally released, after about 2 years of planning and filming. However, this is only part one. Part two has been filmed and will be released November 21st, 2025.
The music in the film is simply spectacular. Cynthia Erivo sings the songs, “The Wizard and I”, “I’m Not That Girl”, “Defying Gravity”, “What is this feeling?” and is featured in “Popular” and “One short Day”. Ariana Grande sings, “No One Mourns the Wicked”, “Popular”, “What is this Feeling?” and is featured in “Defying Gravity” and “One short Day”. And there are many other great songs like “Dancing through life” sung by Jonathan Baily, and “A sentimental Man” by Jeff Goldblum. The movie even pays homage to the play, with cameos of the original Elphie (Idina Menzel) and the original Glinda (Kristin Chenoweth).
I highly recommend seeing this movie. It will make you laugh, cry, sing, and dance. Also, don’t forget the new Flagship theater in Churchville is now open, so it’s the perfect opportunity to see Wicked and check out the new theater. There isn’t a set date for Wicked to leave theaters but when it does you will be able to stream it on Peacock. The theatrics of this movie are so intricate and well thought out, there is no doubt it will be popular!!
