Trump won the 2024 election, but Maryland is, very much, still predominantly blue. Angela Alsobrooks won the senatorial election against Larry Hogan. This was not a landslide win and was considered a very competitive race. Approximately 44% of Maryland voters chose Hogan, while 54% chose Alsobrooks. Hogan was considered by many as a beloved Governor of our state for eight years between 2015 and 2023. For a Republican to win twice in the blue state of Maryland does speak to how much Marylanders like him. But for many, no matter how much you may have liked Larry Hogan, you just could not vote for him this time around. Too much was at stake with this election. To flip a Senate seat from Blue to Red was too big of a risk for many. If you watched any of Alsobrook’s commercials that ran before the election, you would have seen that this was one of her most powerful statements. 54% of Marylanders knew that Larry Hogan would vote as a Republican on key issues, such as abortion.
However, in Harford County, Larry Hogan was the candidate of choice by almost 64% of voters compared to Alsobrooks 32%. This means that many voters in Harford County “split their ticket” because Kamala Harris received 41% of Harford County votes.
Alsobrooks will be the first black senator to represent Maryland. She will have an uphill battle in the Senate, given the fact that Republicans do have control, with 53 senators compared to 47 Democrats. Alsobrooks will be sworn in on January 3rd, 2025. I think that Maryland will stay blue for the foreseeable future, and if anything, this election helped make Maryland even more blue eventually. Most of Maryland is already aware that the senate is red, and they will vote for a blue senator again to try and give Democrats the majority. and I think that the Democrats will win the 2028 election because Trump will be out of terms.
