At C. Milton Wright we have a pathway called Child Growth. Child Growth is an insightful course offered at our school that delves into the various stages of human development from infancy through adolescence. This class covers essential topics such as physical, cognitive, and emotional growth, providing students with comprehensive understanding of how children develop and learn. Through a mix of theoretical lessons and practical activities, students gain valuable knowledge about developmental milestones, the impact of environment and genetics, and effective strategies for fostering healthy development.
Student Sophie Murie shares her insights into the course and new playground addition at our school. In a daily class, students do assignments called competency standards, which are things that you need to know about the preschoolers that come and learn from our students. At C. Milton Wright, the students need to know their allergies, sharp objects, and broken toys they need to get rid of. These items and things are all in a book for all students to use as a resource. Recently, there was a small playground built right next to the classroom used for this course. There are resources that allow you to hear what the children are saying outside of the classroom while at the playground. “It has speakers above it so we can hear what the kids are saying” Sophie Murie says. This is useful to different roles in the classroom that students have Sophie says, “There are observers, pre-planners, and teachers. The observers like to use the window that you can see to the playground because you can hear what they’re saying and write down what they say, such as colors and shapes that they teach in the classroom.”
The playground is such an amazing thing as a kid. Kids love to play outside and hang out with friends. Sophie says, “it’s their favorite part of the day”. They typically go out if it isn’t too cold for them, but normally, they do since they bring jackets. “They love to play pretend and go down the slide”, she says. Students love to see their preschoolers learn and see how they develop. It is an amazing course to see how they grow and interact with some children that you enjoy spending time with.
