On average, high school students spend around 10 hours per week studying outside
of school. Studying for exams and tests can be an overwhelming time for students. The allnighters, distractions, it sets students up for ineffective studying. Studying is a necessity
for a student’s success as it can help them become more confident and have less stress
when done right. In this piece I have combined study tips from multiple college websites,
including Harvard, UNC, Dartmouth, and more.
1. Create your environment
Find a space in your home that is free of distractions. Try to find/create a place
that isn’t too overstimulating and is calming for your mind. Harvard also
suggests having some water and food close to you to stay fueled.
2. Distributed Practice
To ensure you can remember information long term, spread out your studying
sessions. This learning strategy helps you prevent procrastination by allowing
you to study for a short amount of time each day, instead of dreading a long
study session the night before the test.
3. Specific Study Methods
Use methods that include repetition and memory to more fully engage your
brain in the information. This may include making flash cards or mnemonics to help remember key words.
4. Set Goals
By setting realistic goals, you can see how much progress you have made. It
helps you organize and plan when exactly to study so that you can ensure you
have the time.
5. Taking Breaks
You do not have to go on marathons to study. It’s important for your mental
health that you take breaks to reduce your stress. During these breaks, take the
time to refuel your body, practice self-care, and reset.
