Students all over the country from different districts have complained about school times and why they should be changed. Some students complain that school starts too early, or school gets out too late. Would schools agree on changing the times? Would school boards even care to listen to the students’ opinions?
According to many studies, it’s been proven that school times can affect a student’s health in various ways. Some of them being sleep deprivation, short attention span, and affects mental health. Although many schools start at different times, they still influence students. Students tend not to get much sleep because of not going to sleep on time or school times being too early. Many students have mentioned before that they would take time to study and do homework for hours and end up not going to sleep on time because of it. On top of that fact, many schools have an early start time, so that means the students don’t get that much sleep and if this continues, it’ll be the start of sleep deprivation and a decline in mental health.
Early school times cause many students to turn to things that would help keep up their energy, such as coffee or energy drinks. Studies show that too much caffeine or sugary energy drinks can affect students’ brains and their performance in school.
Why is this important? This is important because it’s crucial for a student to get sufficient hours of sleep, so they’ll be able to perform and function well in school and, so to avoid complications related to lack of sleep to keep students healthy, no matter the student’s situation.
What can we do about changing school times? We can spread as much awareness as possible and address the problem as well and try to gather enough information from many sources to support why school times should change. Eventually, we could be able to present this problem to professionals. Once there’s enough agreement and awareness, hopefully the school times will change, and students will be able to get the sleep that they need.
