At C. Milton Wright High school, a significant portion of juniors have acquired the ability to drive. However, the school’s parking policy, which only provides ten emergency passes for juniors, has been a source of concern. This issue is particularly pressing for students who can’t access bus transportation or those who participate in after- school sports activities.
The student’s perspective:
One such junior is Landon Krepps, who shared his personal experience. He stated that his bus ride lasts an hour, and due to his year-round sports commitments, he is unable to use bus transportation or rely on parents for pick-up after school. On most days, when Landon fails to secure a junior parking pass, he resorts to parking wherever is possible, resulting in a $15 ticket.
The administration’s perspective:
To gain a broader understanding, I spoke with the school secretaries, Ms. Sams and Ms. Quigg. They informed me that the county mandates parking for part-time senior students, currently we have 168 students. Given that there are 234 total parking spots, this leaves a limited number for juniors. The school issues 3-5 tickets daily to juniors parking without a pass, further highlighting the issue.
The widespread dissatisfaction:
Many students have voiced their dissatisfaction, often noting the sight of unoccupied parking spaces. This has led to a growing sentiment that the school should be more accommodating towards juniors who are unable to use bus transportation or have parents drive them, especially those involved in sports, clubs or band throughout the year.
Conclusion and solution:
The current parking situation at C Milton Wright High School is far from ideal, particularly for junior students. The solution could be issuing more parking passes to junior students. This would not only alleviate the difficulties faced by many students but also foster a more inclusive and understanding school environment.
