On Thursday, October 9th, the C. Milton Wright Girls Volleyball team hosted the 2025 Pink Out. Pink Out is a yearly fundraiser for the Girls Volleyball program in support of breast cancer research through the Side-Out Foundation. The Side-Out Foundation, founded in 2005, states that since their onset they have been “laser focused on a single goal” of helping those with metastatic (stage IV) breast cancer.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women in the US are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lives. Thankfully, however, the relative survival rate over five years when caught in early stages is 99%, and only 30% of early breast cancer diagnoses will metastasize and progress to Stage 4. When cancer has metastasized, that means that the cancerous cells have spread beyond the area of origin. At this point, it is generally considered incurable (unable to be eradicated in the body with a low chance of recurrence). The Side-Out Foundation aims to do research that could change that.
Dig Pink is an event typically hosted by women’s volleyball teams in the month of October to raise money through the Side-Out Foundation. For several years, the C. Milton Wright Girls Volleyball team has hosted a Dig Pink game and donated proceeds to Side-Out. To raise money, they sold t-shirts and raffle tickets for baskets donated by local businesses as well as some bigger items. While all of this happens outside of the gym, the main event happens inside.
This year, the pink out game was October 9th against Harford Tech, who had a record of 6-11 this season. The gym was full of energy; the court and the student section were roaring. In a quick game, our CMW girls’ volleyball team won in just three sets (3-0). Between sets, raffle tickets were called, announcements were made, and most importantly, the pinkest fan competition happened. For the past couple of years, Matt Sampson has had the competition on lock. This year, however, Isa Herrera had come with a vengeance. Usurping the returning pinkest fan, Isa, after years of being runner-up, was officially declared this year’s winner.
