Inside Fashion’s Biggest Night

The Met Gala is a themed benefit for the Met’s Costume Institute that takes place every year on the first Monday of May. Due to Covid-19 the 2020 Met Gala was postponed, which is why it took place in September this year. The theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”  The Met Gala is a very prestigious event and only the biggest stars are invited to walk the carpet, but lately there has been a lot of debate about whether or not the Met Gala’s guest list was appropriate this year.

Guest List Controversy

Many people were disappointed in this year’s guest list. Several big celebrities could not attend this year due to Covid or conflicting schedules. Nicki Minaj caused quite a lot of stir, for example. She admitted on Twitter that she was not yet vaccinated, so she was not allowed to go to the Gala due to their Covid restrictions. But not only have we lost some of our favorite stars, it seems there are many new faces this year. It’s no surprise people were shocked to hear that Tik Tok influencers such as Addison Rae or Dixie D’amelio were invited to the Met Gala this year. The Met Gala is known to be a very exclusive benefit where only A-list celebrities would be invited. Many people do not consider influencers to be celebrities, so this guest list led many people to wonder if the Met Gala is as prestigious as it once was. However, social media influencers still have quite a big impact on American fashion, so is it really that shocking that they were invited?

The Night’s Biggest Looks

There was a lot of looks that created quite a lot of buzz on social media, here is a quick overview of the most talked about fashion. Kim Kardashian stepped out dressed in a black Balenciaga outfit, covered entirely head to toe. People were very confused by the outfit and how it matched the theme of American fashion. Lil Nas X turned heads on the red carpet when he stepped out in a layered gold outfit designed by Versace. Each layer of the outfit represents a different stage of coming out as LGBTQIA+ in America. Billie Eilish reminded many fans of Marilyn Monroe as she walked the carpet in a stunning Oscar De La Renta gown. It was inspired by old Hollywood glamour.
