This past weekend the Mustang wrestling team sent six wrestlers to Showplace Arena in Prince Georges County for the 2019 Maryland State Wrestling Championship. CMW state qualifiers were sophomores Logan Dvorak, Staki Gourgoulianis and James Riveira along with junior Teddy Stinson and seniors Jake Blanchard and Sawyer Sturla. Stinson got off to a strong start making his way to the semifinals with ease, but then fell in a close match to Marquez Cooper of Quince Orchard. Stinson then returned to his winning ways with a fourth-place finish, capping off an impressive season which included both county and region titles. Having one of the toughest roads to third was sophomore Staki Gourgoulianis. After getting pinned by Garrett Lee of Leonardtown, Gourgoulianis battled back avenging his lose over Lee with a last second pin and winning four other matches over several highly ranked opponents, to take third in the state for the second year in a row. Defending champion sophomore James Riveira made things look easy as he made his way to finals with 3 pins all in the first period. Riveira faced former state champion Sean Vosburgh of Leonardtown in the finals and captured a convincing 9-3 victory, almost pinning the Leonardtown junior several times. With a champion and two top six place finishers, CMW had the most success out of any UCBAC team, and with its young core still here, the Mustangs look to replicate their success next season.
