After the recent snow storm where temperatures reached a record low, it’s important for people to realize how dangerous the cold can really be. It is important to remain inside and dry during cold weather as hypothermia can kill even in relatively cool temperatures if a person is wet. Your body loses heat 25% faster in water rather than air. In -30 degrees hypothermia will be felt in 10 minutes, at -40 it will only take 5-7 minutes.

Your body’s core temperature should be at 98.6 degrees, this way your body can function normally. Hypothermia causes a decrease in core temperature which leads to serious issues.

At a core temperature of 91 degrees a person will experience amnesia, a loss of consciousness at 81 degrees, and death at about 70 degrees and below.

Frostbite is also a serious problem, at 0 degrees with a minus 19-degree wind chill, a person will experience frost bite in 30 minutes. At -15 degrees with a -55 degree windchill, frostbite can be seen within 5 minutes. If a limb gets frostbitten it can turn into dead tissue and will need to be amputated before it spreads to the rest of the body.

So, remember to dress properly, don’t leave pets outside for very long, and avoid going outside if possible when temperatures are low. Wear layers and clothing with insulating material such as flannel and fleece. Avoid the roads if they’re covered in ice and snow. If possible, stay indoors and stay warm.
